What is GSCC (History) ?

Since April of 2003, a new city-concept-based graduate school for working people named "Graduate School for Creative Cities (GSCC, master course)" has been established in front of Osaka Station and on Sugimoto Campus in order to revitalize cities in Kansai region. The mission is to foster high level professionals through the interactive small-group study and to create the knowledge and wisdom which are orientated to problem-solving for the regeneration of the cities and regions. Furthermore in 2005, doctoral course for practical researchers was inaugurated to open. Up to now, over 1000 students have been admitted, and every year over 300 students in all fields of master and doctoral courses study their specialties.

What is GSCC (in relation to cities) ?

"Creative City" is the city that has bloomed its full potential of creative function (the most fundamental function of cities). However in these days, many big cities around the world have experienced serious decline because of the lack of this creative function.

"Creative City" is the core concept of promising urban strategy to revitalize stagnated cities in the world. GSCC (Graduate School for Creative Cities) is the first research institute entitled as Creative City designed to bring up professional persons to take an active part of urban regeneration. GSCC will approach to the construction of creative cities from various view points like urban business, urban policy and urban information study in the master course, and urban policy, international regional economy, business creation, Co-existing Society creation and urban information environment in the doctoral course. Research methodology of the GSCC is based on key concept of creative cities and interdisciplinary.

Students can graduate from GSCC with master degrees only by commuting 2 weekdays at night and Saturday in a week in almost all study fields except one study field of Information Systems Innovation'

GSCC provides study program for busy working people to get through with credit by commuting 2 weekdays at night and Saturday in a week, in Urban Business / Urban Policy course and one field of Urban Information Study Course (Knowledge Information Infrastructure).

Information Systems Innovation study field in Urban Information Study Course offers a series of lectures in the daytime on weekday on Sugimoto Campus, and at night on weekday and in the daytime on Saturday at Umeda Satellite Campus.

GSCC's Workshops are the most unique education system managed by the proper professors to invite leading persons in various fields as guest speakers, who provide the present and future situations on their own fields. Guest speakers Workshop lecturer teach in the first hour and the questions and answers, discussions and conclusive remarks by the professor are followed in the next hours.

A unique graduate school in search for the theme 'the creation of creative cities'

As an unique graduate school to make Kansai a creative area, we have conducted special research project titled 'the creation of creative cities' through many projects in collaboration with students such as 'Urban Regeneration by Arts', 'Ougimachi Creative Village (OCV)', 'New Industry Clusters', and 'Library Project'.
